Joining an MMA gym can be a daunting adventure. To often people say, “ I need to get in shape “, when referring to what they need to do before actually joining. However, it’s far from true! From personal experience, I joined Long Island Mixed Martial Arts, at complete low in my life, in terms of health. The gym for me and like many others becomes the place you come to actually get in shape and turn your physique and skills around. You learn not only a daily skill set of moves to specific martial arts like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, Wrestling to name a few but also responsibility, health consciousness and a sense of brotherhood. Your first day at the gym won’t be an ocean full of sharks and coaches watching you drown. Although my first experience in the gym was catching a friendly jab from UFC’s own Ryan La Flare, as he was coaching me to defend incoming punches (I learned that day). You make the best of your experience. You can ease yourself into classes. Find which routines and combination of classes work best for what you’re trying to learn and achieve. Set weekly and monthly goals for you to accomplish. Before you know it, you will form good habits and a gain an abundance of knowledge. To top it off, you will also have a jump start on getting in shape.
Taking the virtual leap of faith is confronting yourself and saying to yourself that you want a better version of you. Albeit it is easier said than done. You won’t know your potential until you take that first step forward. I’ve been there making the excuses for my self as to why you’re apprehensive to join. You will start on a Monday or tomorrow I will call and find out information. When you stop making excuses you discover how untapped we are in regard to potential. Although a gym full of men and women attacking each other at times sounds scary, you learn quickly everyone who is there is there learn and share their wealth of knowledge. Unless you take the risk you don’t discover the family bonds you form with in the gym, your different peaks of interest with in each sport. Some fears that may prevent you from starting your experience may be that you’re inexperienced and never trained in any form of martial arts or that you’re a woman and don’t want to train with all males. However at Long Island Mixed Martial Arts those doubts and concerns are eased with beginner’s classes and an all women’s class. The beginner class is great for forming a foundation in the respective martial art, in which you can build off of. At the end of the day it’s a decision you make and you own. I know from personal experience that joining LIMMA was life changing from the aforementioned attributes learned and gained. Taking that chance gives you the same opportunity afforded to many others and me. Regardless, you will never lose, you will only learn.

UFC FIGHT NIGHT MAIA vs CONDIT LONG ISLAND MMA PREVIEW
In recent news the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) has rescheduled a bout between Damian Maia and Carlos Condit from its original booking on UFC 202 to now headline the fast approaching UFC on Fox 21 which will take place on August 27th. While both men are well rounded mixed martial artists both are known for their specialties which for Maia is certainly his Jiu Jitsu while for Condit it would be his striking skills. This bout will likely come down to the man that is able to establish greater control of his opponent and as Maia has shown in his recent fights he is absolutely been able to do just that. However, although able to control well, as the fight ages into the later rounds Maia has shown that he is vulnerable to skilled strikers assuming they also possess skilled wrestling abilities. This was displayed in his bout against Long Island MMA’s Ryan LaFlare. As the rounds passed it began to sway more and more in LaFlare’s favor although in this instance Maia was still able to achieve victory.
Under the circumstances that Carlos Condit is able to drag Damian Maia into deep water and consistently stand up or avoid the takedown all together this could be a dangerous match up for him. However, this begs the question of whether Condit possesses the Jiu Jitsu skill set to survive the early onslaught of grappling that Maia is undoubtedly going to bring to the octagon that night for the main event? Who will be able to enforce their will come August 27th? If Maia is able to win what does this mean for him and a possible title shot? If Condit wins where will he find himself in the rankings after breaking the prominent win streak of Maia? Sound off below with your feelings and opinions about this match up!

Long Island MMA predictions for UFC FIGHT NIGHT THU. JUL. 7 DOS ANJOS VS. ALVAREZ
The next major event that the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) will be hosting is set to take place Thursday July 7th; a date which is fast approaching. UFC Fight Night will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada and is littered with several very interesting match ups, some of which us here at Long Island Mixed Martial Arts have already set our picks! The first match up that we have decided on is between John Makdessi and Mehdi Baghdad.
These two fighters both possess exceptional striking and have the ability to deliver devastating power through their attacks. Makdessi possesses somewhat of a more exotic approach to his striking, incorporating several spinning attacks with both his hands and feet. Such unpredictable attacks make the possibility of catching Baghdad off guard slightly higher. Mehdi, however, is more of a traditional Muay Thai striker and is able to put together precise and disciplined combinations. Thus we may suppose that his striking may be somewhat more consistent than that of Makdessi. Using this reasoning as well as taking into account his significant reach advantage, we believe that Mehdi Baghdad will win this fight.
The next fight that we have predicted is between Alberto Mina and Mike Pyle. It seems that Mike Pyle possesses significant superiority in both the fields of striking and wrestling. Where it seems that Mina’s striking is readable and inconsistent Pyle is able to put together combinations and create angles of attack. In the wrestling department, the inconsistency of Mina’s wrestling offense displayed against Yoshihiro Akiyama leads us to believe that he will be trapped on the feet with Pyle; a situation that he is ill equipped for. Therefore, we have chosen Mike Pyle to be the winner of this fight.
Lastly, we have reviewed the match up for the main event which is a title fight in the lightweight division between the champion Rafael Dos Anjos and the challenger Eddie Alvarez! After some deliberation we believe that the champion will retain his title. Although Eddie Alvarez possesses brutal toughness and tenacity that has allowed him to devastate opponents in the past we feel that the composure and precision of Rafael Dos Anjos will carry the day. So there you have it, a few of our picks for the up and coming UFC Fight Night! Do you agree with our choices? If not, sound off in the comments and tell us your reasoning.

What Happened to UFC 200?
What Happened to UFC 200?
There is so much build up for UFC 200; everyone was excited to see what the UFC had in store for us. UFC 100 is still the organizations highest selling event so one would imagine that UFC 200 would be pushing to top that record. For some reason though, Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz 2 is the headlining fight for what could potentially be UFC’s biggest event to date. But wait, didn’t that fight just happen? I’m pretty sure McGregor went up two weight classes to fight Diaz, who didn’t have a full camp, and got embarrassed when he lost the fight via rear-naked choke. Now I wouldn’t mind seeing Diaz beat up on McGregor again, but I didn’t expect to see it so soon and if I’m not mistaken, doesn’t McGregor have a title he’s supposed to defend? Speaking of the Featherweight championship, the UFC scheduled another fight for UFC 200, Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar for the Interim Featherweight Championship belt. It’s pretty interesting that there is a fight for an interim title when the Champion of that division is not only healthy and active, but is fighting on the same card. I’m really not mad at McGregor, I’m sure he’s doing what he feels is best for him. I have grown to appreciate both the skills he has shown inside the octagon, and his comedy act outside the octagon. I still can’t help but to feel insulted by the UFC for putting McGregor on a pedestal, above all other fans and fighters. I was excited the first time he was scheduled to fight Nate because he had just won the title and I wanted to see if he could go beyond that. After the loss though he should go back and defend the title, it doesn’t seem right for him to just stall a division while he gets to hand pick who he fights next. It raises the question that maybe McGregor just doesn’t want to fight Frankie Edgar? I’ve never heard Conor go off on one of his rants about Edgar before, and McGregor has something to say about everyone. Maybe McGregor is hoping Jose Aldo takes out Frankie because Conor feels safer fighting Aldo again. To me it seems like Edgar has a good chance at beating McGregor, if I was Conor I might try to dodge him too.I’ll only forgive the UFC for this if they make the Madison Square Garden event the greatest card in history. There is so many great fighters from all over NY and Long Island. I know that all the guys fighting out of Long Island MMA in Farmingdale want a piece of that card. If we could get a card filled with the likes of Jon Jones, Chris Weidman, Ryan LaFlare, Dennis Bermudez, and Chris Wade the fans in NY would go crazy!

Long Island MMA Fight Team | MMA on Long Island
The Long Island MMA Team is Growing Strong!!
At UFC Fight Night 83: Cowboy vs. Cowboy, Dennis “The Menace” Bermudez went up against Tatsuya “The Crusher” Kawajiri and got himself an impressive win with a unanimous decision. Kawajiri grinded out the first round by pressuring Bermudez, trying to force him against the cage and to the ground where Kawajiri assumed he had the advantage. In the second and third rounds Kawajiri learned the hard way that his strategy does not work against Dennis the Menace. Bermudez put his explosive striking to work whenever there was space, and closed the gap to control and deliver some vicious ground and pound which lead to his victory. This win marks another dominant performance from a fighter on the Long Island MMA team.
Bermudez has been training and fighting out of Long Island MMA located in Farmingdale NY, and it seems all of the fighters out of this gym have been victorious as of late! Welterweight contender Ryan LaFlare closed out December of 2015 with an extremely impressive performance against Mike Pierce. LaFlare’s whole career has been dominant as he is currently 12-1 and has won 5 out of his 6 UFC fights. Each fight we can see just how his skills are improving, LaFlare’s earlier matches showed a lot of his wrestling background and more recently he has showcased his superior striking skills he developed under the training of Henri Hooft. Another UFC fighter out of Long Island MMA is Lightweight contender Chris Wade. Chris has won all 4 of his UFC matches and finished 2 out of 4 with first round submissions. Wade’s most recent win was at UFC Fight Night: Dillashaw vs. Cruz against The Ultimate Fighter contender Mehdi Baghdad. Chris dominated Baghdad for 4 and a half minutes before locking on a rear naked choke to finish, and this fight was scheduled on short notice! Chris has been confident in his skills and has recently called out some of UFC’s top fighters like Sage Northcutt and Connor McGregor. Not only does Long Island MMA have top notch UFC fighters, but it is also a home for the Bellator Bantamweight Champion Marcus “Loro” Galvao. Galvao has gone up against the best Bellator has to offer and is currently holding the title with a 4 fight win streak. Galvao took this title from Joe Warren at Bellator 135 where Loro had Warren screaming from the pain of a serious kneebar. You can see that Long Island MMA has top notch trainers, each specializing in the many different arts that can make a complete fighter. Not only is the instruction at Long Island MMA the best, but the facility in which they use is also the best and cleanest MMA facility on Long Island. They use a 12,000 square foot facility which includes over 5,000 square feet of training mats, full MMA cage, bag section, weight and cardio equipment, locker rooms and showers, sauna, and even an in house Sports-Massage Therapist. Nate Diaz gets the golden ticket to fight Conor McGregor at UFC 196 | Long Island MMA
Yesterday news broke that Rafael Dos Anjos was out of the UFC 196 super-fight with Conor McGregor. There was no shortage of people who lined up to get the fight with Conor McGregor; amongst the list of the possible contenders was Long Island MMA’s Chris Wade. Unfortunately Chris Wade was not the winner of the Conor McGregor fight but instead just as Long Island MMA predicted Nate Diaz will step in for the injured Dos Anjos and challenge McGregor.
UFC president Dana White revealed late yesterday that Diaz would step in for RDA. Dana also revealed that not only will Diaz be fighting McGregor but he will be fighting him at 170lbs instead of 155lbs the weight he was going to fight RDA at.
According to the UFC’s president the fight was also offered to both former featherweight champion Jose Aldo and fan favorite Frankie Edgar who both turned it down.
Although Long Island MMA would prefer to have seen RDA vs McGregor we are excited to hear the verbal fight before the physical one on March 5th!

Dos Anjos out of UFC 196 Chris Wade asks for fight! | Long Island MMA
With Rafael Dos Anjos out of UFC 196 fight Long Island MMA’s Chris Wade throws his name into the hat to Fight Conor McGregor.
Today it was reported by many news sources that Rafael Dos Anjos is out of the fight with Conor McGregor. RDA suffered a foot injury that will most likely sideline him from the March 5th super fight against fan favorite and UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor.
With only 11 days until UFC 196 the list of prospects to fight Conor are slim, Twitter is clamoring for Donald Cerrone or Nate Diaz to take the fight since both opponents are down for a scrap any time.
Well there might be another man who is more than willing to fight the “Notorious” one, Long Island MMA’s Chris Wade announced today on Twitter that he was more than willing to head down to Las Vegas on March 5th and try to take out the sport’s biggest draw.
Out of all the options available Donald Cerrone, Nate Diaz or Wade, Long Island MMA believes that Chris has the best chance to beat the 145lb champion because of his strong wrestling and grappling ability. We suspect the UFC will pick Diaz because of the trash talking aspect but we can dream can’t we?
BREAKING NEWS: RDA out of UFC 196 with foot injury
Rafael dos Anjos out of UFC 196 with Conor McGregor.
The biggest MMA fight in
history was set to for Saturday march 5th in Las Vegas, Conor McGregor
the UFC featherweight champion of the world was set to fight Rafael Dos Anjos
the UFC’s lightweight champion. This fight was going to be the first time two
current UFC champions faced off inside the octagon.
However there have been multiple reports today saying Rafael Dos Anjos is out due
to a foot injury. The UFC has not made any official announcements about the
fight but a broken foot will side line RDA. It is also unclear if McGregor will
stay on the card, but Long Island MMA believes it is more than likely that
Conor will fight on the card.
This is not the first time something like this has happened to Conor, on July
11th 2015 Conor was set to face the Jose Aldo who held the 145lb
belt, but Aldo was sidelined. The UFC offered Conor Chad Mendes an almost
complete opposite stylistic match up and Conor took that fight without
hesitation. So if we had to guess we would imagine Conor would fight someone at
155 on March 5th the question is who?

Long Island MMA on UFC 197 | Long Island MMA
It has been confirmed! On April 23rd 2016 we will see the highly anticipated rematch between Jon “Bones” Jones and Daniel Cormier, as well as a matchup between Demetrious Johnson and Henry Cejudo. The UFC had hoped that 197 would be held at Madison Square Garden in New York City, being the organizations first event held in the state of New York. The federal court has not yet ruled on Zuffa’s appeal on New York’s MMA ban, causing the preliminary injunction UFC was hoping for to be denied by a federal judge. In light of all this the UFC has moved the event to Las Vegas. At UFC 197 Jon Jones will be looking to regain the Light-Heavyweight Championship that he never lost from Daniel Cormier. DC is the last person Jones fought inside the Octagon before he was stripped of the title due to his hit-and-run incident in New Mexico. At the time Jones was scheduled to fight Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, but was replaced by Daniel Cormier after his incident became public and UFC was forced to take action. DC had defeated Johnson and successfully defended the title against Alexander Gustaffson, and he feels this time around he is ready for Jones and the fans will see different results than their previous bout. Jones on the other hand is confident he will defeat DC again, regain his championship, and give Rumble Johnson the fight he deserved last year. The Co-main event we will see the UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson against the Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo. Mighty Mouse Johnson has been one of the most dominant champions the UFC has ever seen. He is on a 9 fight win streak and has been the only Flyweight Champion the UFC ever had. Henry Cejudo on the other hand has had a very successful career himself, not only was he a 2008 Olympic Gold-Medalist, but he is currently 10-0 in his MMA career. Demetrious has dominated all of his recent fights, making it seem as if no one is on his level. Cejudo is in for the biggest fight of his life; let’s see if he is ready for the test. UFC 197 is building to be a card you don’t want to miss. BJ Penn has announced his return to the UFC in the Featherweight division, and they are planning for this comeback to be at UFC 197. His opponent is TBD at the moment, but it is exciting to hear that such a legendary fighter will be returning. Let’s keep our fingers crosses for BJ to find a good opponent, and for Jon Jones to keep himself out of trouble!

Dos Anjos Vs McGregor | Long Island MMA
Will the UFC have their First Simultaneous, Multi-Division Belt Holder?
There is no denying that Connor McGregor has been taking the UFC by storm. His self-belief is like no other, always seemingly biting off more than he can chew, just to prove to everyone that he was right. From his bold statements to his bold outfits, he has been able to catch the eye of media and fight fans around the globe. Love him or hate him, he has proven that he can back up all his talk with 18 out of his 19 professional wins being finishes, most of which with strikes. Now that McGregor defeated Jose Aldo to become the new UFC Featherweight Champion, he is immediately taking shots at champions of other divisions. McGregor has his next bout with the UFC Lightweight Champion, Rafael dos Anjos, scheduled for March 5th 2016 at UFC 196. This is going to be a big fight for both of the individuals. If McGregor wins he will be the first simultaneous, multi-division belt holder the UFC has ever had, and if Rafael dos Anjos can be the one to defeat Connor, his pay, popularity, and reputation should skyrocket. Dos Anjos is a true veteran of the UFC, coming up on his 8th year with the company, his first fight being at UFC 91 in November of 2008. RDA has more wins under his belt than McGregor has fights. Looking back on Rafael dos Anjos, you can see how his game evolved into him becoming the strong dominant fighter that he is today. RDA has wins over many of the greatest in the stacked lightweight division, where everyone on the top 15 list has championship potential. Rafael finished former lightweight champion Benson Henderson, and also finished Donald Cerrone who was on an 8 fight win streak. RDA took a unanimous decision over the talented Nate Diaz, and dominated Anthony Pettis for 5 rounds to become the UFC Lightweight Champion. He is definitely no push over, and has earned his place at the top of his division. Is Connor up for the test? It seems as if 155 is a more comfortable weight class for the Featherweight champion, but he hasn’t fought at lightweight since 2012, and has never competed at that division in the UFC. There is no question about Connor’s skills anymore, he talks a big game, and has backed it up, but his fight with Chad Mendez exploited some of McGregor’s weakness. Can Rafael dos Anjos manhandle McGregor the way Mendez did, without getting knocked out? We did see what he is capable of against an elite, flashy striker in his fight with Anthony Pettis. McGregor, or “Mystic Mac” as he refers to himself, boasts of a first round finish over the Lightweight Champion, and has even called out the Welterweight Champion, Robbie Lawler, for his next fight! Did Mcgregor reach his limit yet? It’s hard to doubt a man that has not been proven wrong, tune in on March 5th to witness UFC history in the making!

Ronda Rousey shows her face again! | Long Island MMA
Ronda Rousey shows her face again!
Since Ronda Rousey lost her UFC Woman’s Bantamweight Championship to Holly Holm at UFC 193 this past November it seems she has been in hiding, leaving everyone guessing when and if she will come back and what her next move will be. It seems she thought it was a good idea to make her first appearance just a few days ago on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, but many fans of Ronda and SNL do not share her enthusiasm over it. First, this was an important show because it was the first time we got to hear from the former champ since her loss to the current champion Holly Holm. Ronda congratulated Holly Holm on her victory and said it “was a fight Holly deserved to win.” It did take a few months for Rousey to show Holm the respect she deserves, but it is refreshing to hear that a humbled Ronda Rousey is growing past her loss. Now that she accepts and respects what happened in that fight with Holm she can move forward and potentially work her way back to the top. Not only was Ronda’s appearance on SNL important for her and her fans, but it was important for MMA as a sport because this was the first time an MMA athlete hosted SNL. It’s great to see that the sport has become more widespread throughout the country and the world, UFC moves the world of MMA forward in a great way. The only problem was that people were not impressed by the episode at all. Most opinions were very critical of Rousey’s performance; the harshest ones were comparing it to her performance in the Octagon against Holly Holm. The nicer reviews complemented Ronda on her acting ability, but criticized the SNL writers for not being able to write a good script as of late. Say what you will of Ronda Rousey’s acting abilities, or the SNL writer’s creative abilities, Ronda needed to make a move back into the public’s eye. Losing a big fight and then disappearing off the face of the earth raises question to a champion’s character, the best thing she can do is show the perseverance to push through and learn from the experience. A strong character is what separates the good from the great, and solidifies the true champions as legends.

What’s next for UFC Bantamweight Division??
On January 17th 2016, the UFC Bantamweight Championship Belt was returned to Dominick Cruz after his split-decision victory over TJ Dillashaw. Cruz dominated with footwork and totally took Dillashaw out of his element, never letting him get comfortable. TJ Dillashaw has been known for having amazing footwork, being very light on his toes. It was quite the opposite this time, in his fight with Cruz he appeared flatfooted and sluggish, not able to land any of his shots. Watching Dillashaw’s fight against Renan Barao, many people have compared Dillashaw’s style to that of
Dominick Cruz. Cruz had a lot to say on that matter before their fight saying “When people make a comparison, they don’t know what they’re comparing.” Cruz believes that he created the style that Dillashaw tries to mimic, so there is no way that Dillashaw would have a chance at beating him. Cruz was also questioned often about his potential “ring-rust” because he has only had one fight in the past 4 years. When questioned after the fight Cruz responded with “There is no such thing as rust. Rust does not exist unless you don’t train hard enough.” This says a lot about the mental strength of the
champion. After being out for so long with so many injuries, Cruz has the perseverance to come back, still be the most agile fighter in MMA, and win the championship belt that he never lost in the first place. Who is next for the Champion? Uriah Faber issued his own challenge to Cruz, but the more exciting match-up would be Uriah Faber vs. TJ Dillashaw. Faber and Dillashaw have some bad blood since Dillashaw left team Alpha Male to train with Duane Ludwig. Thanks to Connor Mcgregor’s antics on The Ultimate Figher, Dillashaw was labeled as a “snake in the grass” and pushed Uriah Faber to fight him. Barao just lost his last two title fights, so the only other potentials are Raphael Assuncao or Aljamain Sterling. Only time will tell who’s next to step up to the plate, the bantamweight division will have to step up their game if they plan to dethrone the current Champion.

Sock it to me!
Another Good Deed from the Fighters and Coaches at Long Island MMA!! Long Island MMA of Farmingdale, the premier MMA facility of Long Island NY, closed out 2015 with a very generous Toy Drive to help children who were less fortunate during the holiday season. The turnout was amazing as they had over 100 gifts for the Toys-for-Tots organization. Now that the New Year has come, they are moving right along to their next endeavor. This time around they are collecting brand new socks to donate to the homeless!
Socks are a very important to your overall health, providing the wearer with padding, moisture absorption, and warmth. Homeless will often be stuck wearing socks that are old and damaged, or will go without socks at all! This lack of protection can lead to bacterial or fungal infections, blisters, and frostbite. People are usually most grateful for socks because they are in such high demand and in low supply. Typically when you think of donations you think of money or food, but there is always so much of that donated and not enough undergarments. Not only are they not donated enough, but the homeless go through socks faster than you and me because they are getting more use out of them. This sock drive will be very important now that we are getting into the coldest months for New York. We love that Long Island MMA proves to be more than just a “UFC Gym.” All the Fighters, members, and coaches are like a family, and when they are not training or teaching, they are trying to inspire others and help make Long Island a better place for everyone!
