Does Brazilian Jiu Jitsu work in a street fight? | Long Island BJJ | BJJ on Long Island

As the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has evolved it has developed more and more complex techniques. Most of these techniques have been designed particularly to win matches in competition. For example, the berimbolo which is used to take the back and acquire points, the worm guard, an extremely tight position used to control your opponent. It is often the complexity of this evolution that leads people to ask the question, “is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu an effective means of self-defense”?

A video has recently surfaced that may shed light on the issue. The video consists of two men seen having an altercation on a basketball court over the game that they have been playing. The argument continues to escalate until finally one of the men becomes violent. He throws a punch at the man who happens to be a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and immediately takes action. The video captures him pulling guard and immediately transitioning to his attackers back, not only nullifying his ability to strike him but placing himself in a position to stop the attack. Several attempts by the Jiu Jitsu fighter to submit his opponent are flaunted by two men who begin to grab and attempt to pull him away but he doesn't give up knowing he will most likely take damage otherwise.

Seeing as they can’t remove him the men let the altercation continue and after a short scramble both men end up sitting down in what appears to be 50/50 guard. He has secured a heel hook and warns his attacker to stop. He says “I will tear your knee…. You’ll never play basketball again.” His attacker seems to heed his warning as the scrambling stops and the altercation ends. Regardless of what anyone has to say about the legitimacy of Jiu Jitsu on the street it is irrefutable that the simple knowledge of positioning and control is enough to turn the tables on an assailant, as was displayed by the practitioner in this video.

Al "M0ther#ucker" Jones' Next Fight | Long Island Mixed Martial Arts

Long Island Mixed Martial Arts has been putting out very impressive talent since their arrival on the MMA scene. One of the newest fighters out of Long Island’s premier MMA facility to make his professional debut was none other than Alfred Jones. Alfred had carried an undefeated amateur record of 7-0 before his move to the professional stage. Each of these bouts labeled him as someone to be feared. Each fight was a showcase of his vicious striking ability and all ended via KO or TKO. Alfred Jones made the decision to turn pro and compete for the CFFC (Cage Fury Fighting Championships) at their 41st event. Alfred shocked the fans by not only showcasing his enhanced wrestling abilities, but his superior grappling! He won his professional debut against Noel Arcibal via Brabo Choke in the third round of the bout.

Alfred Jones next fight for the CFFC will be taking place at CFFC 44 This will be Al's second Professional Fight with this organization. This opponent undoubtedly has their hands full with a fighter as well rounded as Jones. Alfred trains with  world class coach Gregg DePasquale whom also trains the likes of Chris Wade and Dennis Bermudez,  who are both UFC fighters. He is surrounded by a tough team and having proven in his debut that he is not only a striker one can imagine the statement that sent to the division. Whereas some might have once said “Al Jones is a dangerous striker” they now say “Al Jones is dangerous” and he will continue to prove he is a dominant force in the division come CFFC 44.

CM Punk to the UFC WTF?

At UFC 181 pay-per-view on Saturday night December 6th, former WWE champion "CM Punk" reviled that he had signed a multiple fight deal with the UFC. CM Punk’s real name is Phil Brooks and Phil Brooks has zero combat experience outside of his WWE roots.
CM Punk can be seen as far back at 2012 training with Rener Gracie in some YouTube clips. In those clips he is wearing a white belt indicating to us who have participated and competed in Jiu Jiu that he is a beginner. In 2 years of training it’s unlikely that his blue belt level of Jiu Jitsu will be enough to help him win a professional fight in the biggest organization on the planet. Phil “CM Punk” Brooks is 36 whereas many UFC greats have been competing into their late 30’s some even 40’s, those men have extensive combat backgrounds that Phil does not.
At Long Island MMA we have seen multiple fighters make it to the UFC we have witnessed fighters like Chris Wade put it all on the line and quit his job to pursue fighting full time. The signing of CM Punk bothers me because the UFC purposely didn’t hire fighters who are legitimately the best in the world like Ben Askrin and chose instead to pick out fighter like Punk who has only the ability to draw eyes to the UFC. Now I understand the UFC is trying to make up for the ratings drop off that happened when Brock Lesner left but Brock was a legitimate combat athlete.
Sorry Punk but we have no faith in you at Long Island MMA and fully expect this to blow up in your face.

Long Island MMA's Chris Wade gets the call from the UFC!

Its official Long Island mma’s long time lightweight prospect Chris Wade will be making his UFC debut on August 30th on the undercard of Dillashaw vs barao 2. He will be the first fight to kick off the event in Sacramento, California. This will be Chris’s first fight on the UFC stage and he will be taking on fellow newcomer Cain Carrizosa (6-0) who is also making his debut on the big stage.
Anyone who knows Chris Wade knows how much heart and work ethic he has and that this was a long time coming for the long islander. Chris started as a well credential wrestler but has made the full transition into a talented young MMA fighter , picking up skills in Jiu-jitsu  and striking. Chris has finished multiple fights by submission that was started by his advanced wrestling and striking techniques.
Chris’s opponent Cain Carrizosa is a undefeated prospect also looking to make a leap into the big show on the UFC stage. Cain, with two ko’s, two submissions, and two decisions so far in his professional career proves that he is a well rounded fighter and can possibly get it done anywhere. The lightweight prospect will have the advantage of fighting in his home state of California but surely we all know Wade is mentally tough and this should have very little effect on Chris.
This might be Chris’s debut on the big stage but this is not Chris’s first time training for a big fight. Chris held the lightweight title and has successfully defended his title in the Ring of Combat promotion in Atlantic City. Ring of Combat is a major talent pool for fighters on the east coast and has catapulted many fighters and big names into the UFC such as guys like Chris Weidman,  Matt Serra, Franky Edgar, fellow teammate and Long Island mixed martial arts co-owner Ryan LaFlare, and many others. This will play into Chris Wade’s favor as he not a stranger to being in the spotlight or competing under pressure.
Chris has been working for this opportunity for a very long time and is training very hard to make his dreams a reality. With the help of an elite team here and the Long Island Mixed Martial Arts and Fitness Center and Wade’s determination, it would be nearly impossible for Chris to not walk away with his first win in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and get the recognition he deserves. Chris trains with elite level guys such as Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt  and head instructor here at LIMMA Greg Depasquale, featherweight rising talent Dennis ‘the Menace’ Bermudez , UFC welterweight Ryan LaFlare, and many other talents here at the gym in Farmingdale, New York.

MMA on Long Island is exploding. LI MMA in Farmingdale leading the charge!

Long Island MMA | Martial Arts on Long Island are exploding, Long Island MMA is leading the pack.

Long Island MMA in Farmingdale has 7 fighters competing on the NYFE the biggest local amateur MMA show

With Mixed Martial Arts Exploding in Long Island many local fighters are making there debut in Jamaica Queens.

On June 7th New York’s premier mixed martial arts organization returns to the Amazura Concert Hall in Jamaica, Queens. New York Fight Exchange will kick off its third installment and showcase the best mma gyms in Long Island and New York City. All of NYFE’s fights are sanctioned by the World Kickboxing Association (WKA), the only sanctioning body permitted to oversee professional combat sports such as GLORY. Before ever entering the cage all fighters have to go through vigorous prefight requirements, ranging from training and sparring to blood work and pre fight physicals.
On June 7th at NYFE 3: Unstoppable for the first time ever in New York, WKA and NYFE will be crowning 2 New York State Champions and a United States Amateur Welterweight Champion when the undefeated Jerome “The Bull” Mickle steps in the cage with Long Island MMA’s Hugh McKenna.  McKenna is less known in the NY fight scene, but is trained and highly touted by some of the best pro fighters in the region. Some of McKenna’s training partners at Long Island MMA are UFC fighters Ryan LaFlare and Dennis Bermudez as well as Ring of Combat Lightweight Champion Chris Wade. The champion Jerome Mickle has been destroying his completion ever since first lacing up his gloves. Mickle started his career fighting in the NY underground MMA fight scene. At NYFE 1: Believe The Hype, Jerome headlined the event with fellow NY welterweight Aaron Sifflet which ended in dramatic fashion and the huge crowd at Amazura Concert Hall saw Mickle knock out Sifflet, proving he was the real deal. On March 15th “the bull” was back in the NYFE cage against highly praised and dangerous striker Jonathan Lopez. Mickle went on to get the victory late in the second round using some big ground and pound strikes to force the referee to stop it. This fight between Mickle and McKenna wil be a great main event and the perfect fight to cap off this incredible fight card New York Fight Exchange has put together for the New York fans!
The WKA NY State middleweight title has a lot of the people in the Empire State’s close nit combat sport community talking when two seasoned vets collide in the co-main event. Eric Ott will step in against Constantine Gemelas in one of the most anticipated fights of the year. The two warriors were supposed to meet at NYFE 2: Ides of March but an unfortunate injury put the brakes on the fight coming together. The two middleweights have shared training partners in the past, many have said this will be the NYFE fight of the night and could go either way.
In the third title fight of the evening, World Kickboxing Association will crown their New York State Bantamweight Champion once the dust settles after Long Island MMA’s Mike “The Caveman” Kuhn and NYFE Bantamweight tournament winner Elijah Punzone step in the cage. Both fighters are young and hungry and train with great camps. This fight should be a great treat for the fans when two of the most explosive 135 pound fighters try to impose their game plan on their opponent.
Time and time again, New York Fight Exchange has promised top notch fight cards, high level produced events and an overall great night out on the town for their fans. NYFE continues to show why they are the “Kings of NY MMA” by stacking their cards with the best mma fighters representing the most respectable gyms in the tri-state area. They have positioned themselves to be working right alongside WKA as the elected officials continue working on ironing out the legislation to overturn the “Pataki Ban” that prohibits professional mixed martial arts in New York State. New York is the only remaining state that still does not allow professional mma fighters to make a living in their home state. This prompted a class action lawsuit brought against the State of New York by Zuffa, UFC parent company, and many New York professional fighters.
The future goal for New York Fight Exchange is continue to showcase the up and comers while also having recognizable professionals headlining the events. “We want to stay focused on our next generation of fighters and continue to put them on the platform and under the bright lights like they deserve, If you think about it, if NYFE was doing these shows 5-10 years ago the ammys that potentially could have fought for us would be Weidman, LaFlare, Iaquinta just to name a few of the guys from the local scene. I want to discover and showcase the next big name in New York MMA!” said NYFE co-owner Mike Washington. We believe it is only a matter of time before pro mma is legal in New York, and with organizations like New York Fight Exchange and several others showing the people that do not support the legalization of the mixed martial arts, that events can be done safely. New York Fight Exchange follows pro level medical including full blood work analysis for HIV, Hap A, and Hep C to ensure fighter safety, as well as subject the fight card to the WKA for bout approval and to check for current suspensions.
Long Island MMA in Queens sends 7 fighters to fight
On the June 7th event fans will be treated to a night of great fights at a beautiful venue. There will be knockouts, tap outs and nail biting decisions. All fighters have prepared themselves to go into that cage and leave it all in there. We encourage fans to come witness the future stars of tomorrow, on June 7th!

UFC 129 aftermath: Who Should GSP fight next?

Long Island MMA
It’s inevitable that when talking about the UFC’s most dominant fighter and Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre, phrases like “Cleaned out the division” and “Super Fight” will come up
Georges St. Pierre has 22 wins and only two losses (both losses were ultimately avenged in impressive fashion). GSP has successfully defended the welterweight title a remarkable and record setting sixth consecutive times by defeating Jake Shields by unanimous decision at UFC 129. Though many people viewed this performance as “unimpressive” one cannot doubt his dominance, he is far and away the best welterweight in the UFC and in MMA all together.
GSP improved his record to 9 wins and 2 losses in UFC title fights and a staggering 17-2 overall in the UFC.
At the UFC 129 post fight press conference, Nick Diaz (Strikeforce Welterweight Champion) was brought up as a possibly fight for St. Pierre, to which  UFC President Dana White replied that it would be “interesting”. While White would later go on and admit that he hasn’t sat down with either St. Pierre or  the current UFC Middle Weight Champion Anderson Silva about a possible super fight, this got me thinking would a fight with Nick Diaz be more appropriate then the Anderson Silva “Superfight”?
So with nothing in the works for a super fight currently and Anderson Silva schedule to fight Yushin Okami (which is, despite what people think a very tough fight for Silva) at UFC 134 in August, St. Pierre needs an opponent in the mean time. My question to you guys is who should GSP fight while he’s waiting for the result of Silva -vs- Okami 2? Maybe Jon Fitch again? Perhaps the Carlos Condit Dong Hyung Kim Winner? Or is Nick Diaz the best option? Let me know what you guys think!
