March 14 UFC 185 took place; and on this day we beheld quite a
spectacle! That spectacle being the expert striking of the new women’s
strawweight champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk, which ended her title bout against the
now former champion Carla Esparza by way of a devastating TKO stoppage. Needless
to say, Jędrzejczyk dominated Esparza with her constant pressure and volume of
accurate strikes. Despite several attempts by Esparza to acquire the takedown
the fight remained standing; exactly where Joanna knew it needed to be. After
all, with a record of over sixty victories as a professional Muay Thai fighter
why not utilize such a dangerous weapon?
The current champion is undefeated in professional MMA with a record of nine victories and zero losses. The type of pace and experience she brings to the cage certainly makes for exciting fights! With over ten years of Muay Thai training it is safe to say that although she has only 9 total MMA fights she is a hardened veteran of competition. And her Muay Thai experience certainly translates well into MMA, for example: the use of her elbows to punish Esparza and defend against her takedown attempts. If Joanna Jędrzejczyk is able to replicate the performance that we all saw on March 14 I think it is safe to say that she will remain champion and continue to entertain us with excellent contests!
